- Possible health benefits
Stevia is one of the best natural sugar substitutes, and using stevia as a sweetener carries the potential for various health benefits.
Recent studies have shown that Stevia possesses nearly "zero-calorie" and is significantly less calorific than Sucrose.
The low-calorie count of stevia makes it the healthful alternative of refined sugar and this leads to health benefits in cases such as:
- Diabetes:
As stevia sweeteners do not contribute calories to the diet, they also have shown nearly no effect on blood glucose or insulin response. This is the major reason why diabetics can eat a wider variety of foods and can live with a healthy diet plan.
- Weight Management:
Stevia is the best alternative to sugar when it comes to weight management.
According to a study, the consumption of added sugars contribute an average of 16 percent of total calories in the American diet, leading to weight gain and reduction in the control of blood glucose levels, but that's not true in the case of Stevia as it contains NO sugars and a minimal amount of calories, if any. It can be part of a well-balanced diet to help reduce energy intake without sacrificing taste.

- Pancreatic cancer:
Studies have shown that consumption of stevia within the prescribed ADI (Acceptable Dietary Intake) i.e 4 mg steviol equivalents per kilogram body weight per day can reduce the chances of suffering from Pancreatic cancer. Stevia contains many sterols and antioxidant compounds, including Kaempferol. Studies have found that kaempferol may help to reduce the risk of pancreatic cancer by 23%.
- Blood pressure:
A study on Stevia extracts in the year 2006 has shown that stevia could potentially help lower blood pressure, this is because of the glycosides present in the leaves which tends to dilate the blood vessels leading to cardiotonic actions which normalize blood pressure and regulate heartbeat.
- Allergies and Side effects
According to them “Steviol glycosides are not reactive and do not gets metabolized to other reactive compounds, so it is very rare to have allergies by consuming steviol glycosides in foods until and unless taken in the recommended ADI, i.e 4 mg steviol equivalents per kilogram body weight per day.
- What's The Takeaway?
The stevia products formulated with Reb-A are safe, even for
diabetics and children, they rarely cause any side effects, and they must be
consumed within the recommended ADI i.e 4 mg steviol equivalents per
kilogram body weight per day.
But we should take in care to take stevia in limited amount as
it is 300 times sweeter than sugar which may result in a daily habit of high
intake of any sweetener ( whenever stevia is not readily
available) and can cause detrimental effects on the body.
